This might ruffle some feathers but I'm here to keep it real.
Type 2 Diabetes is part of a notorious group, named the Big 4 -a group of leading diseases that are the leading killers of the senior population. The truth is , most of them can be prevented, or at least managed, with a healthy an active lifestyle.
The Big 4 Chronic Diseases
Cardiovascular disease (heart attacks, strokes)
Chronic respiratory disease (COPD, Emphysema)
Cancer
Type 2 Diabetes
The Hard Truth About Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes doesn't discriminate -- anyone can develop it. Once you have it, you have two choices.
follow a healthy lifestyle
Or suffer the slow painful death
According to the America Medical Association:
90 -- 95% of all diabetes cases are Type 2
37 million Americans live with diabetes
Complications include:
Heart disease
Kidney failure
Amputations
Blindness
Loss of independence
Nothing is scarier than losing your independence, mobility, and ending up in a nursing home. Not even death.
The Good News
That nightmare? It's avoidable -- and if you already have Type 2 diabetes it's beatable.
Step One: See your doctor and get baseline tests:
Blood Panel
A1C test
Thyroid test
Hormone panel (men and women)
You might also consider working with a nutritionist and or a personal trainer.
Lifestyle Choices Matter
You are what you eat!
If you consistently eat like a diabetic, you're on the fast track to becoming one. Overworking your pancreas by constantly spiking blood sugar will eventually break your pancreas down.
Avoid:
simple sugars
Highly processed carbs (boxed noodles and rice, and most breads)
Include:
Protein at every meal (lean is best)
Complex carbs (oat meal, beans, legumes, potatoes, sweet potatoes)
Healthy fats (mostly plant based, liquid at room temp)
Pro tip:
Shop the outer aisles of the grocery store -- that's where the fresh, minimally processed food lives. Always read labels and understand the labels. Know your macros: proteins, carbs, and fats.
Move Your Body/Get Active
Diet is crucial but so is movement. Consistent exercise improves insulin sensitivity, burns fat, builds muscle and longevity
Top Activities For Beating Type 2 Diabetes
Weight Training ( builds muscle, boosts metabolism, improves blood sugar control)
Swimming
Paddle Boarding (my personal favorite -- great upper body and core, balance and coordination, plus it's fun)
Resistance training isn't just for bodybuilders -- it's for anyone who wants to age strong.
The Bottom Line
Make Healthy Dietary Choices
Start an exercise routine -- prioritize weight training
Find a fun, active hobby you enjoy. (Your imagination is your only limitation)
Type 2 diabetes is preventable -- and in many cases reversible -- with the right knowledge and discipline. Start with a visit to your doctor, then commit to the habits that keep you healthy and independent.
Retirement isn't the end of your story -- it's the start of your best chapter!
